A couple of weeks ago Daniela Barbosa posted a short story on this project over on her blog. The National Gallery is displaying a selection of reproduced works of art (the likes of Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers”) in the streets of London. To get info to the paintings you can call a phone number and listen to it – like those audio guides you can get in the museum, but on your cell!
A number of organizations have made this project possible. It is great exposure for all involved to a huge number of people! Not only your regular Londoners, but an increased amount of tourists (since it’s the start of the summer holidays all over Europe). Daniela identified Hewlett Packard as one of the sponsors that will probably benefit a lot from this. The pictures were printed on their HP Designjets 1000s, and then stretched and mounted. I am curious to see how it looks, but I would imagine that they look stunning. It is a great way to display their expertise in printing.
I will be loading my photos from my Grand Tour onto my flickr account and my review here either from London or upon my arrival in Vienna if time should run out in London – which is very probable. I’ll tell you how I think the printing worked out – one of the main criteria for HP’s success with this sponsorship. I will also let you know, how and if the sponsors are represented on the streets. I’m curious to see if they can easily be identified by people who just stumble upon random works of art in Soho, or if you need to visit the website to find out these details… stay tuned.
