Last week I read two interesting posts that are very closely related to my work.
Jeff Pulver asked “What is you Social Media Strategy?”. With the rapid rise of Facebook this year many companies started to realize that they might need a Facebook strategy. But as Jeff Pulver points out: “While some companies will have a strategy in place, many won’t and those companies are at risk for being disrupted by an emerging medium if they take a pass and not engage their companies at this time. What companies are starting to learn about their business and their interaction with customers is with the advent of social media they need to consider taking a ‘bottom up’ approach to their business in addition to the traditional ‘top down’ methods they currently follow.”
I agree that companies in the future will know the answer to the “What is your Social Media Strategy?” (this is what I do). I am very passionate about this way of interacting and exchanging, which is why I am excited about the fact that more and more people are realizing the importance of Social Media.
In related news, Steve Rubel wrote an article about an new career path that is developing, in the States at least (it is not exactly what I am doing, but it is definitely related). Steve Rubel describes the “Geek Maketer”: “Most marketers – be they clients or agency side – are heads-down running their business. Therefore, companies are creating a new role. They’re hiring people who act as translators between the ultra geeks and the marketers, if you will, and shepherd the development of pilot programs.” Read the original story, published in AdAge, here. I am curious to see what other new job descriptions pop up in the near future that have got specifically to do with Social Media.
I think this is a very exciting time: organizations can no longer ignore Social Media – the sphere has gained so much momentum that it is crucial for any organization to seriously think about their strategic approach. The question now is: how fast is this going to happen? What’s your opinion?
