I only have a faint memory of NZ broadband speed after 2 weeks of European broadband (all I remember is that it was, well, like dial up in the rest of the world… That may be an exaggeration, but it is definitely slower). Today I was delighted though to read a report that for the first time there is more broadband in New Zealand than dial-up. Have a look here. There you will also find a report about internet use and speeds in New Zealand by Statistics New Zealand. Very useful!

The beautiful islands in the Pacific urgently need to sort out their broadband speeds. Fast internet is a pre-requisite for using a huge number of websites that are essential today. The slow speeds in New Zealand have become a big obstacle to businesses in the past few years, and there is a government initiative going to get Kiwi-broadband up to speed. Hope this happens sooner rather than later.

As many of my regular readers will know, I am moving to Europe tomorrow. I am very excited!

I wanted to express my gratitude for my time in New Zealand, the people I have met, the friends and family I have made, the experiences I have had. And I want to reassure you that I am not falling off the face of the earth – my much loved Social Media enable us to stay in touch! Also, as my fellow countryman said, I’ll be back!

I will be working on kickeyes in Vienna and all over the show, and I will also remain working as a Social Media consultant internationally (and a lecturer at the University of Vienna this coming term). So not to worry – work will continue internationally as normal (again, thanks to Social Media).

I will be only sporadically online until le weekend, when I will be back in touch from Paris, France. Wish me bon voyage – see you on the other side!

Registrations to the Social Media Seminar for Public Communicators on 20 & 21 February 2008 in Wellington, NZ are exceeding room capacity. The Network of Public Sector Communicators and me are therefore offering a second slot for those of you who want to come but have no seat!

We are offering the same seminar on the two mornings of the 20 and 21 February, from 9.00 am – 12.30 pm. For a detailed description of what you can expect I am re-posting the call again – with the new, additional times in bold:

The Network of Public Sector Communicators is hosting a Social Media Seminar on “The use of Social Media in the Public Sector” on two half-days, 20 and 21 February 2008.

Social Media are transforming the way people interact and connect. They are
rapidly becoming a mainstream way of communicating. However, to successfully utilise these channels it is crucial to understand not only
their advantages and applications, but also their rules and risks, and how
to deal with them.

This seminar is aimed specifically at public sector communicators who want
to find out how Social Media are already affecting their work, and who want
to develop a strategic approach to their possible use in the public sector.

It is being conducted by Iris Lamprecht of Loudhail Social Media Consulting.

The seminar consists of two parts:

1. an overview of the most prominent Social Media in use and the possibilities for the public sector to utilise these media
2. the principles of a strategic approach to Social Media, and the creation
of a first draft of a strategy for each participant’s agenda

The seminar will take place over two half days. To ensure a high quality
and relevance to each participant, numbers are restricted to max. 15 people
per half day. Participants can choose to either attend one half day of their
interest, or come along to both half days.

PROGRAMME
Day 1: Wednesday, 20th February 2008, 9.00 am – 12.30 pm
After a short initial presentation and discussion of the most important
Social Media in New Zealand each participant’s experiences with Social Media
will be discussed – their use, their perceptions, their expectations

Following this the seminar will look at these key issues:
1. What are the main Social Media platforms and applications in use at the
moment?
2. How are they being used, and by whom?
3. How can Social Media be utilised in the public sector?
4. What are the trends?
5. How can the impact of Social Media be measured?

The seminar will work through the actual everyday challenges that this form
of communicating might bring.

Participants will leave with a document outlining the key issues of Social
Media, as well as a huge pool of ideas generated during the seminar for
going ahead in “real life” of public sector communication.

Day 2: Thursday, 21st February 2008, 9.00am – 12.30pm

The second day is devoted to those who want to start building a Social Media
strategy for their area: we will go through the process and the key factors
you have to look at and start working on a very first draft for your
specific area.

The main topics will be:
1. How to build a Social Media strategy;
2. Discussion of everyone’s key agenda;
3. Going through the process of diagnosing the appropriate Social Media
strategy for everyone’s specific agenda.

Participants will leave with a very first draft of their Social Media
strategy.

COST
Network members – two half days $600 (GST inclusive) one half day $350 (GST
inclusive)

Non members – two half days $750 (GST inclusive) one half day $425 (GST
inclusive)
